Biodegradable versus Compostable

Food Composting Services believe

While everything that is compostable is biodegradable, not everything that is biodegradable is compostable.  In food recycling the term “biodegradable” has no time frame attached to it, meaning that if a given material has enough time it will eventually break down, therefore it can be described as biodegradable.  Something is “biodegradable” if it can be disintegrated by bacteria, fungi, or some other biological process. Biodegradation is the process of nature taking its course and breaking down materials to their component parts.

In comparison “compostable” has a time frame attached to it, that time frame is defined by the composter, most would like the material in their facilities to break down in less than 90 days.

When you take organic materials and allow it to decompose this then creates fertilizer. Composting is the process of recycling organic waste so that it can be reused. Compostable products do not always biodegrade in a landfill. They have to be placed in favorable conditions.

Compostable products take much longer to break down if in a “air locked” landfill where there will be no oxygen.  Composting is a faster process, but only under the right conditions.
